Prof. Dr. Hüseyin Yılmaz was born in 1970 in Giresun, Turkey. He graduated from Istanbul Technical University, Faculty of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering, Department of Ship and Marine Technology Engineering in 1991. He completed his master’s degree in 1994 and his PhD in 1998 at Yıldız Technical University (YTU), Institute of Science, in the Naval Architecture Engineering Program. In 1993, he was appointed as a research assistant in the Department of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering at YTU, where he continues to serve as a faculty member.
Prof. Dr. Yılmaz became an Assistant Professor in 1999, an Associate Professor in 2003, and was promoted to full Professor in 2009. In 2013, he spent time as a visiting scholar at the University of Michigan, Department of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering in the United States.
Prof. Dr. Hüseyin Yılmaz is also the founding head of YTU’s Department of Marine Engineering Operations. Between 2008 and 2016, he held the position of department chair and head of the department's academic division. He served as Dean of the Faculty of Naval Architecture and Maritime from 2016 to 2023.
Since 2015, Prof. Dr. Yılmaz has been the Director of the YTU Maritime Application and Research Center (YTU-MARINE). Between 2020 and 2022, he served as the founding president of the Maritime Education Programs Evaluation and Accreditation Association.
Throughout his career, Prof. Dr. Yılmaz has held numerous administrative and academic positions, including membership in YTU’s Senate and Board of Directors. He has led many commercial, military, and transportation-focused maritime projects and has authored several book chapters, book translations, and more than 40 international publications.
Prof. Dr. Yılmaz currently chairs the Technical Committee of Türk Loydu, the national classification society of Turkey, and has been a member of the Higher Education Council (YÖK) committee responsible for the evaluation of maritime schools since 2008.
As a consultant to the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, he represents Turkey at meetings of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in London. As of September 2024, Prof. Dr. Hüseyin Yılmaz serves as Vice Rector for Research and Planning at YTU.
